Best Mulled Wine Recipe: Make Mulled Wine Sachet Gifts

I love mulled wine, for me it’s the smell of Christmas. Every Christmas my mam makes a big pot of mulled wine. I think her recipe is the best I’ve ever tasted. She has the recipe in a scrapbook that she has had for over 30 years.  Every Christmas she pulls out the scrapbook to make her mulled wine.  It is the perfect Christmas drink, warm, spicy and with a good kick to it too! Just what you need to get you through a cold winter’s night!

I have made it slightly more modern with the addition of star anise and cardamon pods but I left the rest exactly as is because I don’t want to mess with a classic.

This is the perfect last minute gift to give your friends too, all you need is a few spices from your cupboard and a bottle of red wine! At Christmas I always make up a few sachets of the mulled wine spice mix and stock up on red wine just in case somebody unexpected drops by with a gift. The best thing about it is it will get drunk no matter if somebody drops by unexpectedly or not!

What you’ll need for the mulled wine sachet gift

  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 3 cardamon pods bruised
  • 1 star anise
  • 5 cloves
  • 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
  • 10 inch square of muslin cloth

How to make the mulled wine sachet gift

Place all the spices in the centre of a 25cm (10 inch) muslin square bring all the ends together and secure with a cotton thread.

To make this into a really nice gift, attach the mulled wine sachet to a bottle of red wine with a ribbon and this free printable mulled wine recipe card.

Mulled wine recipe

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1 Mulled Wine Sachet
  • 60 ml or 4 tbsp brandy or spiced rum
  • 500ml apple juice
  • 2 Oranges quartered
  • Sugar to taste.

Put everything in a large saucepan and heat gently for 20 minutes. Don’t let it boil.  Add sugar to taste, apple juice is already very sweet so you won’t need much.  Keep it warm to enjoy straight away or it can be reheated later.

I am absolutely freezing while writing this and I’m very tempted to make up a pot of mulled wine to warm me up.  Ina Garten always says, “it’s cocktail hour somewhere in the world”.  She is a woman after my own heart!!
